What is the Gaussian Plume Model?
The Gaussian plume model is one of the most widely used analytical models in air quality. It describes how a continuous emission from a point source disperses downwind, assuming the concentration profile across and vertically follows a Gaussian (normal) distribution.
How to Use This Tool
- Place the source: Click anywhere on the map to position your emission facility.
- Adjust parameters: Use the sliders and controls on the left to change meteorological and emission conditions.
- Observe the plume: The color overlay updates in real time showing estimated concentrations at a 2 m breathing height.
- Explore scenarios: Try contrasting stability classes A vs F, or calm vs windy conditions.
Atmospheric Stability Classes

| F | Moderately Stable | Clear sky, light winds at night |
Limitations
This is a simplified educational model. Real-world air quality assessment uses AERMOD (EPA regulatory model) which accounts for terrain, building downwash, hourly meteorological data, and more complex chemistry. Concentrations shown are illustrative, not regulatory.
